Statement on Louisiana v. Callais
The Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais weakens one of the core protections of the Voting Rights Act and puts Black and minority representation at risk nationwide.
By blocking a map designed to remedy unlawful vote dilution, the Court has made it harder to challenge discriminatory redistricting and easier for states to sidestep accountability. This ruling elevates a narrow view of “race neutrality” over the reality that racial discrimination in voting still exists and must be addressed.
This decision also reflects a troubling throughline in American history, from the Three-Fifths Compromise to modern-day barriers to fair representation, where Black political power has been constrained while our communities are still counted.
Black voters deserve fair maps and a full voice in our democracy. Black Men Vote will continue to fight to protect and strengthen the Voting Rights Act and ensure equitable representation for all.
